| What is ultraviole[n]t? | ultraviole[n]t serves as the home to my online resources. Papers, Software, etc are available but distribution is kept limited by restricting navigation of the site. If there's something you're looking for that you believe should be here, mail me any questions. The name ultraviole[n]t is completely innocuous. My favorite color is purple, specifically, a shade of purple that is not coincidently the background color of this page. The Latin prefix ultra- has come to indicate excessiveness and, as I have been accused of liking purple to excess, that led me to the word ultraviolet. So what about the [n]? Well, in the context of colors violent means intensely vivid or loud, again indicating excess or intensity. Vivid also means evoking lifelike images within the mind. As it is not possible to register the ASCII characters [ or ] in a domain name, people tend to see only ultraviolent, and those people who do not know me personally tend to imagine all sorts of graphic imagery. People don't usually forget the domain. Finally, if one discovers the properties of ultraviolet light, she'll find that it is rather destructive (don't forget your sunscreen and sunglasses!). Ultraviolet is only one letter away from ultraviolent which I find ironic. So, the take home message is: ultraviole[n]t is mostly harmless. It amuses me, it's a catchy name, and I don't mind making people think. |
